It’s beginning to look a lot like fall. An expert guide to the best fall leaves in Whatcom
Now’s the time to find autumn-colored leaves falling. Washington state is expected to experience its peak of fall foliage colors through Oct. 28.
Whatcom County was expected to be in its peak colors Oct. 10-17th, according to SmokyMountains.com, a U.S.-based park vacation planning company that uses data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to predict when areas across the country will have peak colors.
So where can you view fall leaves in Whatcom county before the colors fade? The Bellingham Herald asked for expert recommendations.
Steve Janiszewski, park operations manager for the city of Bellingham Parks and Recreation Department, suggested:
▪ Whatcom Falls Park at 1401 Electric Ave. Janiszewski recommends walking throughout the entire trail system to view colorful oak and maple trees.
▪ Bayview Cemetery at 1420 Woburn St.
▪ Lake Padden Park at 4882 S Samish Way. Janiszewski suggests walking along the loop trail around the lake.
▪ Cordata Community Park at 4510 Cordata Parkway. Janiszewski recommends walking the trails through the aspen grove that has a “brilliant yellow color.”
▪ Julianna Park at 800 W. Horton Road.
▪ Woodstock Farm at 1200 Chuckanut Drive North.
▪ Big Rock Garden at 2900 Sylvan St.
Whatcom County also has parks full of bright, colorful leaves during this season. Ted Sellers, Whatcom County Parks and Recreation’s regional parks supervisor sent The Herald these recommendations:
▪ Maple Creek Park in Maple Falls. Sellers recommends viewing the small waterfall, scenic creek views and the picturesque bridge along with the bright fall colors. Maple Creek Park is located at 7842 Silver Lake Road.
▪ Silver Lake Park at 9006 Silver Lake Road in Maple Falls.
▪ Welcome Bridge River Access in Deming. Sellers suggests visiting to view the fall colors, as well as views of the Nooksack River. Welcome Bridge River Access is located at 5585 Mosquito Lake Road.
