Whatcom man hospitalized with serious injuries after re-entering his burning home

A Whatcom County man was hospitalized with serious injuries after he reportedly re-entered his burning home and attempted to extinguish it as fire fighters were en route.

North Whatcom Fire and Rescue crews were called at 7:04 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, to Popular View Street in Blaine for the report of a structure fire, according to the PulsePoint app.

Firefighters arrived to find a flames venting out of windows and doors of the single-wide mobile home, North Whatcom Chief Jason Van der Veen told The Bellingham Herald.

Firefighters learned that all occupants managed to exit the burning home, but that an adult male returned inside and attempted to put the fire out, Van der Veen said. That man suffered serious injuries and was taken to St. Joseph’s hospital in Bellingham.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames without fire spreading to a nearby shed, Van der Veen reported, but the home was a complete loss.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to Van der Veen, though nobody else was injured.

The fire came nearly a month to the day after a Sept. 2 fire on Sweet Road southeast of Blaine that resulted in the death of a man who lived in the home.
