Whatcom sheriff’s office investigating fatal home fire early Friday near Blaine

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a fatal home fire southeast of Blaine early Friday morning.

North Whatcom Fire and Rescue and Whatcom County Fire District 7 crews were called at 2:49 a.m. Friday, Sept. 2., to the 4300 block of Sweet Road for the report of a residential fire, according to the PulsePoint app.

North Whatcom Chief Jason Van der Veen told The Bellingham Herald that fire fighters arrived to find the manufactured home was already fairly well involved with fire.

“Crews made rapid entry and searched for victims based on the fact that there were two cars parked outside and nobody was standing outside,” Van der Veen said. “That’s usually a pretty good indicator, so our crews did a pretty aggressive interior search and discovered the single victim.”

Nobody else was injured in the fire, Van der Veen reported, adding that he could not say anything more while the sheriff’s office was investigating.
