Another boat sinks in Bellingham waters
Quick work appears to have contained a fuel spill from a boat that sunk in Squalicum Harbor.
Washington state Department of Ecology reported the vessel sinking on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at a moorage slip in the harbor. Port of Bellingham’s operations staff were able to quickly respond by securing the area and using oil booms and absorbent pads to contain the fuel spill, said Mike Hogan, spokesman for the port.
Hogan said the U.S. Coast Guard estimates about 30 gallons of diesel fuel was released from the vessel. Along with the Coast Guard, the port is working with the Washington State Department of Ecology and salvage teams to finish the environmental clean-up and remove the sunken vessel. He added that the port is in contact with the owner of the boat.
Last month the port and other agencies had to deal with a sunken vessel in the Whatcom Creek Waterway. That 36-foot sailboat was recently removed from the area.
