A sailboat was grounded Monday, July 25, in the Whatcom Creek Waterway near the Granary Building and caused a sheen on the water, officials said.

The partially sunken 36-foot sailboat was reported to the Port of Bellingham, which will deploy booms, or floating barriers, to keep any leaking fuel at bay. The Coast Guard will also respond to the sunken craft.

Officials at the Washington Department of Ecology said the sheen on the surface of the water has almost completely dissipated.

“Our responders don’t seem to terribly concerned (about the boat),” Ty Keltner, Washington Department of Ecology communications manager, said.
