Local non-profit is putting on a second Pride event. Here’s where to find the parade, fair
A Whatcom pride event this weekend offers fun for the family and the opportunity to connect with local nonprofits and additional community resources.
Whatcom Pride will begin with a parade at noon at Depot Market square on Saturday, July 28. Then, a block party will take place at the Kulshan Trackside Beer Garden and Bellingham Waterfront from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The block party will offer a range of resources provided through non-profit organizations along with other vendors and food.
Sponsors for the event include Kulshan Brewing Co. Trackside Beer Garden and Mount Baker Planned Parenthood. Non-profit organizations will offer services for everything from food security to LGBTQIA+ youth services.
The event was organized by Whatcom Pride, a local nonprofit founded in 2020 by Zay McShane. The organization focuses on promoting pride year long, he said in an email with The Bellingham Herald. A focus on “people over profits” and inclusivity are prominent tenants of the organization.
Whatcom pride is the second pride parade this month in Bellingham. The first was organized by Rumors Cabaret, a LGBTQIA+ focused nightclub.
“We received feedback from community members that they didn’t feel connected to ‘corporate pride,’ so the focus of our event is celebrating Pride in collaboration with other local nonprofits,” McShane said.
Whatcom Pride plans to hold events throughout the year including meetup events and dance parties. More information about Whatcom Pride events can be found on its website.
