Here’s how food staple prices stack up at Bellingham grocery stores in June

With food prices rising, The Bellingham Herald compares prices for staples online at local stores monthly to identify low prices.

Food prices have continued to rise throughout 2022, with food prices 9.4% higher in April 2022 compared to April 2021, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

This increase is supposed to continue throughout the year the USDA stated, predicting that grocery prices will increase between 7%-8% in 2022, and restaurant food prices will increase between 6%-7%.

Here’s what prices we found at Bellingham grocery stores Friday, May 6:

Gallon of milk

A gallon of Fred Meyer’s 1% milk is $3.29, up from $3.09 last month.

Safeway’s Value Corner 1% milk is $3.49 a gallon, up from $3.39 last month.

Walmart’s Great Value 1% milk is $3.68, up from $3.19 last month.

Dozen eggs

The price for a dozen eggs varies depending on egg size, grade and color.

Fred Meyer has Kroger Grade AA Large Eggs for $1.59 a dozen, down from $1.69 last month.

Safeway’s Lucerne Farms large eggs are $1.99 a dozen, the same price as last month.

Walmart’s Great Value grade AA large eggs are $1.47 a dozen, up from $1.43 last month.

Sandwich bread

Sandwich bread prices vary by weight and types of wheat.

Fred Meyer has a 20-ounce loaf of Kroger Enriched White Bread for $1.49, up from $1.33 last month.

Safeway’s 16-ounce Value Corner Bread loaf is $1.19, the same price as last month.

Walmart’s 20-ounce loaf of white sandwich bread is 93 cents, the same price as last month.

Cheerios cereal

At Fred Meyer, 8.9-ounce boxes of Cheerios are $4.19 a box, up from $3.69 last month.

Bellingham’s Safeway has Cheerios for $5.49 for an 8.9-ounce box, up from $4.79 last month.

Walmart has Cheerios for $3.48 for an 8.9-ounce box, up from $3.28 last month.

Chicken breast

We compared the prices of frozen, boneless chicken breast.

At Fred Meyer, three pounds of Kroger Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts with Rib Meat is $10.99, or $3.66 a pound, no change from last month.

At Safeway, a 2.5-pound bag of frozen boneless skinless chicken breast is $12.99, or $5.19 a pound, up $1 per pound from $10.49 last month.

At Walmart, three pounds of Great Value Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast is $11.34, or $3.78 a pound, up 47 cents per pound from $9.94 last month.
