Did you feel it? Second earthquake in two days reported south of Bellingham

A second earthquake in less than two days struck just south of Bellingham beneath Skagit County late Monday, May 2.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 2.1-magnitude quake rattled at 11:20 p.m. Tuesday beneath the Swinomish Reservation near Similk Bay. The quake was centered four miles north northwest of La Conner and 10 miles southeast of Anacortes, according to the USGS release.

That put it approximately 20 miles south-southwest of downtown Bellingham, according to Googlemaps.

The quake was measured approximately 13.5 miles beneath the earth’s surface.

As of noon Tuesday, May 3, nobody had reported feeling the shaking on the USGS’ “Did You Feel It” page, and no reports of damage have been made.

The quake came less than two days after the USGS reported a 3.6-magnitude quake at 4:15 a.m. Sunday, May 1, centered approximately one mile east of Mount Vernon.

While quakes between magnitude 3.0 and 3.9 are considered minor and are often felt by people, quakes of less than magnitude 3.0 are common, and tens of thousands are reported worldwide every year, according to the USGS. A quake of magnitude 1.0 to 3.0 is not felt except by a very few under especially favorable conditions, according to the USGS.
