We asked readers which Whatcom County restaurant had the best burritos, and the votes are in.

The poll had 23 restaurant options including local favorites as well as chains in Whatcom County such as Taco Time and Taco Bell. More than 1,150 people voted for their favorites.

Winning with 223 votes was El Tapatio Taco Truck.

El Tapatio offers more than just burritos, as its authentic Mexican menu also features tamales, tortas, sopes and flautas, as well as a breakfast menu and homemade horchata and champurado drinks.

Their menu features $2.50 tacos, and $3 tamales.

The family-operated restaurant opened in 2005 and is influenced by Guadalajara region cuisine to bring customers “an experience that reflects the authentic Mexican flavors and culture,” its website states.

There are three El Tapatio truck locations in Whatcom County, with two locations in Bellingham and another in Ferndale.

El Tapatio’s first Bellingham truck is open from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. The truck is located at 4100 Strider Loop Road. The other Bellingham location is open from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. The truck is located outside Hardware Sales at 2034 James St.

El Tapatio’s Ferndale food truck is open from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and is located at 2504 Grandview Road.

The other options

Chihuahua’s Mexican Restaurant came in second place with 140 votes.

This family-owned Ferndale restaurant opened in 1994 and serves burritos, molcajete, enchiladas and other authentic Mexican cuisine.

Chihuahua’s menu also features vegetarian options, seafood, lunch specials, drinks and desserts such as churros, deep-fried ice cream and flan.

Chihuahua’s Mexican Restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and is located in Ferndale at 5694 3rd Ave.

Chihuahua’s also has a Bellingham food truck that is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and is located at 2039 Moore St. outside of Stemma Brewing Co.

In third place was a popular Pacific Northwest chain, TacoTime with 108 votes.

TacoTime was founded in Eugene, Oregon, in 1960 and has over 300 locations in Canada and the United States.

TacoTime’s menu features burritos, tacos, salads, quesadillas and Mexican favorites made with “a belief that fresh, real ingredients make better food,” its website states.

TacoTime has three Bellingham locations. The most southern Bellingham location is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, and is located at 3600 Byron Ave. TacoTime is also open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily at 4100 Arctic Ave. Another TacoTime is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, and is located at 4373 Meridian St.

TacoTime also has a Ferndale location that is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily at 5623 Riverside Drive.
