Coming to Bellingham: A sandwich shop, a juice bar and a taproom
Here’s a roundup of recent retail activity around Whatcom County:
▪ Big Bites has opened its sandwich shop at 1259 Barkley Blvd., in the former Niener Niener Wiener space by Lowe’s Home Improvement.
Along with sandwiches, Big Bites offers baked goods, bread and drinks. According to its Instagram page, hours are 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturdays.
▪ A Bellingham building permit application was submitted to put in a new juice shop in Sunset Square. The proposed name is Happy Lemon and the plan is to go into the former Grill restaurant space near Harbor Freight Tools.
▪ Darach Brewing Co. has been busy getting its liquor and building permits in order as it remodels the former Green Frog/Firefly space at 1015 N. State St. The brewery is planning a taproom format, focusing on farmhouse-inspired beers and IPAs.
According to its Facebook page, the owners are aiming for a late summer/early fall opening.
▪ Paws for a Beer is bringing back live music with an outdoor concert season.
The Fairhaven bar, which is near the Bellingham Cruise Terminal, will have its first live music concert at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 30. Rock bands Book of Shred and Vendovi will take the stage.
“We are thrilled to feature Vendovi and Book of Shred in the largest outdoor dog bar space in town,” said Rylan Schoen, who founded Paws with his wife, Amy.
Dogs are welcome to come to the show, as long as they are older than six months, fully vaccinated and spayed/neutered.

▪ Two businesses recently opened in one space in Fairhaven.
Donna Moorman-Wright recently opened a dog grooming salon and a knife sharpening business in the 12th Street Square building on Old Fairhaven Parkway.
An open house for Poodle Creek Grooming and Poodle Creek Sharpening is scheduled for 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20.
Moorman-Wright has more than 20 years of experience in the pet care industry as a grooming salon owner, dog trainer, consultant and pet shampoo manufacturer. She also has six years of experience in the sharpening industry as a sharpener, trainer and workshop host.
“We have some fine pet salons in Bellingham but the pet grooming industry has been short-handed for years,” she said in a news release. “We probably could use twice as many people.”
Poodle Creek Grooming and Poodle Creek Sharpening are located at 1514 12th St., Suite B-101. Hours are 8 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays. For more information, call 360-296-5875 or visit the company’s website.
▪ Free Comic Book Day is back at Comics Place in downtown Bellingham.
The event runs from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday, May 7. Along with passing out free comics books, the store will have a sale throughout the weekend.
To protect staff and customers, Comics Place will be limiting the number of people in the store at a time, requiring proof of COVID-19 vaccination for anyone 12 or older, and requiring a mask. Details of the event can be found on its Facebook page.
