COVID started it. Will rising food prices continue this trend?
As grocery costs rise many are looking for ways to save.
In 2022, food-at-home prices are predicted to increase 3%-4%, and food-away-from-home prices are predicted to increase 5.5%-6.5%, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service website.
One way to save on food is to grow your own.
More people started growing their own food in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a study by Miracle-Gro, the plant product producer. According to its survey, about 33% of adults in America were already growing plants before the pandemic; since then, 22% more have started.
“According to our survey results, two-thirds (67%) of adults are growing or plan to grow edible plants, including vegetables (52%), herbs (33%), and fruits (31%).”
Garden Pals, an online gardening community, found statistics showing that 55% of American households garden, and that the average garden grows $600 of produce each year.
Garden Pals also found that during the COVID-19 pandemic, 18.3 million more people began gardening.
