Here’s how food staple prices stack up at Bellingham grocery stores
With food prices rising, The Bellingham Herald compares prices for staples online at local stores monthly to identify low prices.
The Consumer Price Index for food at home rose 1.4% in February after rising 0.6% in January, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported March 10. The February increase was the largest monthly increase since April 2020.
And for the 12 months ending February, the food index increased 7.9%, the largest 12-month increase since the period ending July 1981.
Here’s what we found at local grocery stores Friday, April 8:
Gallon of milk
▪ A gallon of Fred Meyer’s 1% milk is $2.99.
▪ Safeway’s Value Corner 1% milk is also $2.99 a gallon.
▪ Walmart’s Great Value 1% milk is $3.19.
Dozen eggs
The price for a dozen eggs varies depending on egg size, grade and color.
▪ Fred Meyer has Kroger Grade AA Large Eggs for $1.69 a dozen.
▪ Safeway’s Lucerne Farms large eggs are $1.69 a dozen.
▪ Walmart’s Great Value grade AA large eggs are $1.59 a dozen.
Sandwich bread
Sandwich bread prices vary by weight and types of wheat.
▪ Fred Meyer has a 20-ounce loaf of Kroger Enriched White Bread for $1.33.
▪ Safeway’s 16-ounce Value Corner Bread loaf is $1.19.
▪ Walmart’s 20-ounce loaf of white sandwich bread is 93 cents.
Cheerios cereal
▪ At Fred Meyer, 8.9-ounce boxes of Cheerios are $3.69 a box.
▪ Bellingham’s Safeway has Cheerios on sale until April 12 for $2.50 for an 8.9-ounce box, usually priced at $4.79.
▪ Walmart has Cheerios for $3.28 for an 8.9-ounce box.
Chicken breast
We compared the prices of frozen, boneless chicken breast.
▪ At Fred Meyer, Kroger Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts with Rib Meat is $9.99 for three pounds, weighing in at $3.33 a pound.
▪ Safeway has 2.5 lb bags of frozen boneless skinless chicken breast for $10.49, $4.20 a pound.
▪ Walmart has Great Value Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast for $9.94, weighing in at $3.31 a pound.
