Lululemon store opens in Whatcom; new brewery, Asian grocery planned
Here’s a roundup of recent retail activity around Whatcom County:
▪ Banter is continuing to ramp up both its After Hours spot on Prospect Street and its cafe near the Mount Baker Theatre.
Both locations are now open every day, with Banter After Hours on Prospect adding lunch starting at noon and happy hour from 3:30-6 p.m. The lunch menu for After Hours is similar to dinner, which currently includes potato pierogies, rice/veggie bowls and a variety of shared plates.
The cafe on Commercial Street is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., serving coffee, smoothies and a breakfast-focused menu.

▪ A Lululemon pop-up store is now open in Fairhaven.
The athletic apparel retailer is in the Fairhaven Tower building on 12th Street and Harris Avenue. According to its website, hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
▪ A state liquor license application was submitted for a new microbrewery at 2000 Main St. in Ferndale. The proposed name is District Brewing and the applicants are Mark and Mary Shintaffer.
According to a December 2021 article in the Washington Beer Blog, the plan is to put in a taproom and a barrel aging facility in the former hardware store. District also has a brewery in Mount Vernon.
▪ A state liquor license application was also submitted for a grocery store at 2044 Main St. in Ferndale. The proposed name is Ferndale Asian Grocery and the applicant is Cuong Tran.
▪ The Downtown Bellingham Partnership is offering a grant program for downtown businesses looking to make improvements to buildings, signs and surroundings.
The grant will reimburse up to 50% of the cost of an improvement to a maximum of $2,000 per property.
