Longtime Fairhaven retail store begins retirement sale, Whatcom County restaurant closes

Here’s a roundup of recent retail and restaurant activity around Whatcom County:

Southside Trends Consignment in Fairhaven announced that it is beginning a retirement sale, beginning with 25% off prices.

The store, which is at 910 Harris Ave., is planning to have its final day on May 31. Owner Cathy Lee started Fountain Boutique in the Fountain District 1989, moved it to Telegraph Road in 2003 before locating the business to Fairhaven in 2006.

A sign permit application was submitted to the city to put in a Pizza Hut in the small retail center on Lincoln Street next to the Lakeway Fred Meyer.

The Northern Light newspaper in Blaine reports that a cafe recently opened in Birch Bay.

The cafe is called Rooted by the Bay and it is in the Worldmark building at 7826 Birch Bay Drive. According to its Facebook page, the cafe is also a gift shop, selling items including jewelry and clothes.

Volli Bellingham continues to move forward with plans to put in a pickleball sports bar at 4190 Cordata Parkway, near Whatcom Community College. The company recently submitted a state liquor license application for the 24,000-square-foot facility.

Owners are planning to open the facility sometime in mid-2022. Along with pickleball courts and a bar, the plan is to have other games, including shuffleboard and cornhole.

The Frosty Inn in Maple Falls announced that its last day of business was Sunday, March 6. The longtime restaurant had been closed for several years until 2020. Since 2020 two ownership groups reopened it before shutting down again.

A building permit application was submitted to put in a Betty Be Good store at 1132 Finnegan Way, near the Fairhaven library branch. The company currently has stores at Birch Bay Square and in Lynden.
