Extend-a-Hand donations allow local organizations to make big differences in small ways for Whatcom County residents who need immediate help with housing and health care all year long.

The Bellingham Herald’s Extend-a-Hand charity appeal, now in its fifth decade, partners with Unity Care NW and the Opportunity Council to help families like this one:
Having just left a domestic violence relationship and the housing that came with it, AB and her child were sleeping in their car when they first came to Opportunity Council for help.
Thanks to Extend-a-Hand, this family immediately moved into the safety of a local motel where AB started work on building a new life for her and her child.
She worked with Opportunity Council’s Employment Services to get her small business up and running, and was soon able to move into an apartment at Dorothy Place, the Opportunity Council program created to provide homes and support to people that find themselves homeless due to domestic violence.

The Herald covers administrative costs up to $50,000 in donations, so gifts directly support people assisted at Unity Care NW and the Opportunity Council. Donations are tax-deductible, and donors through Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2022, will be recognized in The Herald.
