School closures for Bellingham and Whatcom County for Thursday, Jan. 16.
Whatcom County and Bellingham school districts have announced they will remain closed for Thursday, Jan. 16, due to the recent snowstorm.
Bellingham Public Schools Superintendent Greg Baker wrote in an e-mail to parents:
“First, thank you for all the support about how we handled today’s closure. The storm definitely hit hard, and we have a lot of snow pretty much everywhere, along with a growing number of power outages. While the main roads are getting cleared (thank you, city and county road crews and our buildings and grounds staff!), we certainly have major challenges on side roads and at our schools. There is no indication that the weather is going to improve in time to help for tomorrow. I also know how much folks appreciate knowing whether schools are open as soon as possible.”
Lynden, Mt. Baker School District and Assumption Catholic will also be closed Thursday, according to flashalert.net.
The Ferndale, Blaine and Nooksack Valley school districts and Lummi Nation announced on their websites that their schools will be closed on Thursday.
Meridian School District announced at 5:30 a.m. Thursday that it would close for the day as well.
Bellingham Technical College and Whatcom Community College announced they are closed and all classed canceled Thursday.
The Western Washington University storm line said Thursday morning that campus was closed for the day.
Bellingham Public Schools also announced it will be providing free meals Thursday in recognition that school closures can impact students’ access to food. Sites and times are 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at Shuksan Middle School cafeteria, Eliza Court, Villa Santa Fe, Sterling Meadows and Regency Park.
Email Jessica.Sankey@bellinghamschools.org with questions about how to access a meal or food.
