As coronavirus restrictions ease, here are Whatcom stores offering curbside service

With phase one of easing the coronavirus restrictions under way across Washington state, Whatcom County retail businesses are starting to reopen with curbside service.

It’s part of Gov. Jay Inslee’s Safe Start program allowing retail stores to start the process of reopening. In phase 2, which could happen in early June, retail stores can start allowing a limited number of customers inside to shop, but there will be a list of restrictions in place.

Here are some of the plans that are rolling out this past week, as well as some of the retail stores that opened earlier this month.

Outdoor, bike services

The outdoor recreation retailer REI announced that it is offering curbside pickup and bike shop services starting Wednesday, May 13.

Customers can place an order through REI.com or the REI shopping app and an REI employee wearing gloves and a mask will load items in the customer’s vehicle once they arrive outside the store, according to a news release from the company.

Customers can call the Bellingham store at 360-647-8955 to schedule an appointment for maintenance or repair services, securely drop off their bike outside the store, and an REI technician will service the bike, notifying customers by phone when it’s ready.
