January gas prices survey shows dramatic drop in Whatcom County and across WA
January gas prices in Bellingham, Whatcom County and Washington were down in comparison to The Herald’s December survey, and we found the cheapest local gas station for you.
The average price of a gallon of gas across the United States was $2.83 on Friday, Jan. 2, according to AAA — 16 cents down from last month. Last year, the nation’s average was $3.06.
Here’s the local breakdown:
Washington
Washington’s average cost of gas per gallon is now $3.85 — a 31-cent decrease compared to December’s average. Last January, gas averaged $3.90 a gallon in Washington, according to AAA.
Washington has the third-highest gas prices in the country, following California at $4.26 a gallon and Hawaii at $4.42 according to AAA. Washington has now had the third-highest gas prices in the U.S. for three months in a row.
Whatcom County and Bellingham
Whatcom County’s average cost of gas is $3.59 a gallon, a 33-cent decrease compared to December.
On Friday, Jan. 2, Bellingham’s average price for a gallon of gas was also $3.59, according to AAA, a 35-cent decrease compared to last month.
County’s cheapest gas

The cheapest gas price in Whatcom County on Thursday, Dec. 4, was $3.09 at ARCO, 8247 Guide Meridian Rd. in Lynden, according to GasBuddy.
