Rite Aid keeps announcing store closures. How will it affect Whatcom County?

Since Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy, many are asking what will happen to their neighborhood pharmacies, and more important, how will they fill prescriptions they may need.

Rite Aid has now filed eight notices with long lists of closing stores, but which Whatcom County locations are confirmed to be shuttering?

The company currently has six Whatcom County locations: three in Bellingham, one in Blaine, one in Ferndale and one in Lynden, according to its website.

According to the company’s sixth notice of additional closing locations, the only Whatcom County store slated to close is the one at 3227 Northwest Ave. in Bellingham.

But what will happen to your prescriptions?

“Rite Aid is closing hundreds of stores nationwide amid its latest bankruptcy,” according to previous reporting by McClatchy. “CVS Pharmacy has agreed to acquire the prescription files of 625 Rite Aid pharmacies across 15 states, as well as acquire 64 Rite Aid stores in Idaho, Oregon and Washington.”

CVS Pharmacy currently has one Whatcom County store, inside Target at Bellis Fair mall.
