New study says Whatcom County homes are some of the most expensive in the state, nation
A recent study by SmartAsset, an investment adviser website, compared house costs and financing prices across Washington state, and Whatcom County ranked as one of the most expensive.
Whatcom County’s median home value ranked sixth-highest in the state at $607,240. The most expensive county was San Juan County at $910,079.
Whatcom County’s southern neighbor, Skagit County, had the seventh-highest median home value at $575,946.
Whatcom County also had the sixth most expensive cost to finance a home in Washington, with an estimated median cost of $1,229,206, including median home cost and interest for a 30-year fixed rate mortgage and a 20% down payment.
SmartAsset estimated the cost to finance a home by analyzing the median home value, estimated interest rate, and down payment in 2024.
Whatcom County was also the 105th most expensive county in the United States in which to finance a home.
Whatcom County did have a better ranking for estimated interest rates, ranking 20th in the state.
SmartAsset determined each county’s estimated interest rates by adjusting the national average by county with each county’s average credit score and debt-to-income ratio.
