Whatcom County taproom tackling global water crisis by the pint opens third location
Overflow Taps, a taproom serving a variety of beers, ciders, seltzers and food, has now opened a third Whatcom County location in West Lynden.
But this isn’t your ordinary taproom.
The taproom’s “beer with a purpose” mission is focused on raising awareness for the global water crisis, according to Overflow Tap’s website. The business donates 1% of all sales to building water projects in developing countries.
“It was always our dream to expand in an effort to increase awareness for the lack of clean water in developing areas around the world. We chose Lynden because it gave us an opportunity to expand on our original concept in a community that has supported us over the years,” Jesse Nelson, co-owner of Overflow Taps wrote in an email to The Bellingham Herald.
The taproom announced the opening Friday, Sept. 13 with an Instagram post.
“Over 700 million people in the world live without clean drinking water. Our goal with every pint is to bring awareness to this fact by donating a portion of your pint to help build water projects in developing countries. Since we opened in 2016, just over 1000 people have gained access to clean water,” Nelson wrote.
The new taproom is the business’ second Lynden location, and it took about 9 months to complete, according to Nelson.
“We selected this building because we felt it was a blank canvas with the potential for great outdoor seating,” Nelson wrote. “We hope to give the people of Whatcom county another place where they can enjoy a pint, in good company, for a meaningful cause.”
The new taproom will pour beers from a variety of breweries, such as Stemma Brewing, Chuckanut Brewery, One Tree Hard Cider and Block 15.
Overflow Taps also serves a variety of food at each of its locations, from personal pizzas to wings, pretzel bites and tater tots.
Overflow Tap’s newest location is open from 3 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday; noon to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at 115 S. Duffner Drive, Suite E.
