Whatcom Roundup: Seattle pizza chain coming to Bellingham; restaurant closes; local events
Here’s your weekly roundup of the latest retail, business and restaurant activity in and around Whatcom County:
MOTO Pizza hoping for Bellingham location
MOTO Pizza, a chain pizza restaurant making a “delightfully odd mix of Detroit, New York, Roman, and Filipino goodness,” according to its website, is hoping to open a Bellingham location in 2024.
“I can confirm we have our eyes set on Bellingham in 2024,” Gerard Figurelli, CEO of Moto wrote in an email to The Bellingham Herald.
The unique pizza restaurant known for its pink pizza boxes has locations in T-Mobile Park, Belltown, West Seattle and Edmonds and serves pizzas with toppings such as Dungeness crab, spicy sausage, clam, pepperoni, kimchi, beef adobo, spicy honey, shrimp and the MOTO cheese blend.
No opening date or building plans have been announced.
Black Fern closes
Black Fern, a coffee shop in downtown Bellingham, announced it would be closing its doors Tuesday, Dec. 12. The coffee shop said it would be closing “for the foreseeable future.” It was located inside the granary building at 1211 Granary Ave.
Local restaurant named one of the best burgers in the U.S.
Boomer’s Drive-In, a classic burger, fries and milkshake joint in Bellingham was honored for offering one of the best burgers in the United States by LoveFood.com, an online food publication based in London.
December events, holiday markets and trivia
Bellingham is full of local holiday events, markets, festivals and other events during the month of December. Here’s your guide to this month’s events, trivia nights, live music and more.
These events are going on this upcoming week:
▪ The Shop Small Holiday Makers Market, featuring 50 local vendors will run from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 16 and from noon to 5 p.m. on Dec. 17. The free event will be at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal at 355 Harris Ave.
▪ The Nutcracker classic ballet show will be put on by Opus Performing Arts at the Mount Baker Theatre for four days only. The shows will be at 7 p.m. on Dec. 15, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Dec. 16 and 2 p.m. on Dec. 17. Tickets are available online in advance an cost $25 for adults and $15 for children under 12. Mount Baker Theatre is at 104 N Commercial St.
▪ A free, open roller skate night will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 22 with a “winter onesie” theme. Participants must bring their own skate and equipment to the drop-in event. Open skate will be at the Depot Market Square at 1100 Railroad Ave.
