New Ferndale brewery and Bellingham thrift store open as these restaurants take a break
Here’s a roundup of recent retail activity around Whatcom County:
▪ A new brewery has opened in downtown Ferndale.
District Brewery had its grand opening on Thursday, Sept. 8, at 2000 Main St. According to its Facebook page, Ferndale District Brewing is open 4-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 4-10 p.m. on Friday, noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
In a post on its website, the Washington Beer Blog noted that the Ferndale space is currently a taproom with a kitchen possibly coming soon. The taproom has a variety of memorabilia from the old Ferndale High School gym that was demolished.
Along with the taproom, District Brewing also has arcade games and music and allows outside food. The company’s brewery is in Mount Vernon.
▪ A new thrift store has opened in downtown Bellingham. Mystery Thrift Store opened Saturday, Sept. 3, at 1215 Commercial St., near US Bank.
The company, which also has a store in downtown Ferndale, offers a wide variety of items including board games, clothes, books, furniture and kitchen products.
▪ After wrapping things up on Labor Day weekend, the C Shop in Birch Bay is closed until its next spring/summer season. The candy and ice cream shop is scheduled to reopen on May 12, 2023.
▪ The Rustic Fork restaurant in Blaine announced on social media that it is temporarily closed and does not have a reopening date.
In a Facebook post the owners cited staffing shortages, increases in product costs, a slow summer season and border restrictions as factors for the closure. The owners said they are looking at options, including rebranding and making other changes to make it a sustainable operation.
“We are confident Blaine will continue to grow and offer many services, including this location, in the future months,” the post concluded.
▪ The Iron Rooster Bakery in Fairhaven is taking a break and is scheduled to reopen on Friday, Sept. 30.
▪ Goji Bistro is planning to temporarily close on Wednesday, Sept. 14 as it does some kitchen remodeling. The Asian fusion restaurant is planning to reopen on Tuesday, Oct. 4.
▪ A sign permit was submitted to the city for a new math learning center. It is called Mathnasium and it is going into Sunset Square.
According to its website, Mathnasium has more than 1,000 locations worldwide, including more than a dozen in the Seattle area.
▪ Living Pantry is celebrating its one-year anniversary in Bellingham on Saturday, Sept. 24, at 2400 Yew St.
The company, which is a refillery that’s focused on nurturing a healthier environment, will have store-wide sales, giveaways, treats and demonstrations, said owner Shawna Morris.
