Here’s a roundup of recent retail activity around Whatcom County:

A new Mexican restaurant is arriving soon in north Bellingham. According to its Facebook post, Birrieria Tijuana is planning to open in September in the Northwest Drive retail center that’s across the street from Yeager’s Sporting Goods.

The company has restaurants in Everett, Federal Way, Lakewood, Burien and Spokane. Along with tacos and burritos, menu items include ramen and egg rolls, according to the Birrieria Tijuana website.

A building permit application was submitted to put in a Westside Pizza at 607 Northshore Drive, near the Silver Beach Grocery store.

Westside Pizza has restaurants in Idaho, California, Texas, Utah and Washington. In Whatcom County, Westside is in Bellingham, Blaine, Everson, Ferndale and Lynden.

Structures Brewing received approval for a $96,000 loan from the Revolving Loan Fund that’s run by the Port of Bellingham. The loan was approved by port commissioners at the Tuesday, Aug. 9, meeting as the brewery expands into the former Chuckanut Brewery space at 601 W. Holly St.

According to port documents, the major remodel underway at the space will lead to a new restaurant/tasting room that can seat 200 customers. For now, Structures’ State Street location will continue to manufacture beer.

Tandoori Bites has made a few changes to its restaurant, which is at 505 32nd St. near the Sehome Shopping Center. The Indian eatery has brought back its buffet service. The buffet is available noon to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

The restaurant has also revamped its drinks menu, offering more cocktails that are popular in India, according to a Facebook post.

After passing its final inspections, the bakery It’s the Sweet Things announced on social media that it planned to open on Saturday, Aug. 13.

The bakery is in the former Kay Cake Design space at 1206 Cornwall Ave., near the Hotel Leo.

Alaska Wild Fish & Chip Co. announced that it is operating a second food truck. That truck will make a regular Sunday stop in Bellingham’s waterfront district, near the Kulshan Beer garden and Waypoint Park.

The truck will be at that spot 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays until Sept. 25. The company’s other food truck operates at 268 Marine Drive in Blaine.

Carl’s Mower & Saw is moving into a new building, but it won’t be far from its current spot.

The company announced in a news release that on Monday, Aug. 15, it is moving to 6195 Portal Way in Ferndale. That’s near its current store at 6209 Portal Way.

The new location more than doubles the size of the business, giving Carl’s 9,600-square-feet of space. The store will continue to focus on selling outdoor power equipment in the bigger building

The Ferndale business, founded by Carl and Beth Levien in 1990, is open 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays. For more information, call 360-384-0799 or visit the Carl’s Mower & Saw website.

Bay to Baker Trading Company in Fairhaven continues to work its way back to normalcy as it finishes up a major remodeling job in the front of its building.

In December 2021 a car crashed into the front of the building, causing quite a bit of damage. The business closed for a bit as work was done to fix the damage and has gone through stages of reopening this spring and summer. The store is now open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day.

More Bellingham businesses are looking to take advantage of this stretch of nice weather by hosting their own markets and outdoor events.

Several businesses in the Granary Building are hosting a Party at the Pier night 3-8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27. Along with businesses in the building, there will be other vendors dropping in, along with live music. Details can be found on the website localsonlymarket.com.

Stemma Brewing is starting up its own regular market. It’ll be held on 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25, in the brewery’s parking lot at 2039 Moore St. The market will have a variety of vendors, including local artists and bakers. Details can be found on its Facebook page.
