Wander Brewing owners plan something new; pub opens with ice cream nearby
Here’s a roundup of recent retail activity around Whatcom County:
▪ The Newsroom Pub is open for business at 608 Front St. in Lynden. According to its website, the pub will offer local food, beer and cider that honors Lynden’s heritage. The business also has an ice cream shop called The Daily Scoop, offering 12 flavors of Edaleen Dairy ice cream.
Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, staying open an hour later on Friday and Saturday.
▪ A liquor license application was submitted for a new business at 1205 Washington St., in the former Carne meat shop spot near Elizabeth Park. The proposed business name is Wander Coffee & Beer, with Chad and Colleen Kuehl as applicants. The Kuehls are also the owners of Wander Brewing.
▪ The Sylvia Center for the Arts announced on social media that it will close on or sometime before the end of October. The center, which is at 207 Prospect St., cited financial concerns, the departure of its executive director and difficulties renewing the lease as factors.
The center will have one final summer theater season, with the final performances scheduled for Sept. 10. Full ticket and schedule information can be found on its website.
▪ The Birchwood branch of WECU will be home to the Bellingham School District’s Community Transitions Program.
The credit union branch, which is at 1600 Birchwood Ave. near Big Lots, will operate as a branch until Friday, July 15. After that the building will be remodeled and be home to Community Transition sometime in the 2022-23 school year, according to a news release from WECU.
WECU will maintain ownership of the building and credit union members will continue to have access to an ATM at this location. The credit union will also increase staffing at its nearby Fountain District branch for those who need in-branch services, said Keith Mader, program manager at WECU.
The Community Transition program is currently at Bellingham High School, but the new space is a welcome addition for the school district.
“This is great news for students receiving services in Community Transitions and our staff. We really admire WECU’s good intentions for using a building to help others, and they have always been a generous community partner,” said Greg Baker, superintendent of Bellingham Public Schools, in the news release.
With more than $2.5 billion in assets, WECU serves approximately 144,000 members and employs more than 400 people.
