This longtime Whatcom County farm is staying in the family, will continue to offer u-pick
A longtime Whatcom County farm known for its u-pick events and tasty treats has decided not to sell and will keep the business in the family.
In a social media post to its customers, Boxx Berry Farm announced that it has taken the 25 acres of land off the market. The farm was put up for sale in March 2019 as Mike Boxx and his brother, Roger, planned to retire. In an email, Mike Boxx and his wife, Crystal, said that while there was some mild interest in the property, the family talked it over and decided to go with a different business model. Mike and Crystal Boxx plan on staying in the business, with their son, Brandon, and his wife, Megs, coming on board.
There aren’t expected to be any big changes to day-to-day operations for the farm, which is at 6211 Northwest Drive near Ferndale. This summer will mark the return of many things that were curtailed during the COVID-19 pandemic. They will once again be serving up strawberry shortcakes and ice cream in the store as well as hosting events.
At this time of year, the most common question is the status of the local strawberries. That crop is the traditional kick-off to the u-pick season. Mike Boxx said the first strawberries should be ready in the second week of June, although some might be ready in the first week if temperatures warm up along with more sunshine. U-pick usually follows a week after the first strawberries arrive.
As of now, the Boxx Berry strawberries will only be available on the farm. After the strawberries are picked, the farm moves on to raspberry and blueberry u-pick events. The farm, which was purchased by the family in 1960, has a variety of other items for sale, including vegetables and flowers.
