A new food truck is making sure more of the fish caught by local fishermen lands in the mouths of Whatcom County residents.

Headquartered in Bellingham, Captain’s Cod Company recently added a second food truck that began serving the Western Washington area, including Whatcom County. The company was founded by two couples, Shaun and Amanda Andrew of Bellingham along with Rob and Alicia Wurm of Lynden.

The company started its first truck in 2020 serving Eastern Washington, because of the potential demand for tasty fish meals. It wasn’t long before they were getting regular requests for a food truck in Western Washington locations, Amanda Andrew said in a phone interview.

The trucks serve up cod that comes from Alaska; Shaun Andrew is a commercial fisherman for Lynden’s Alaska Leader Fisheries and is captain of the Northern Leader, a 187-foot longliner that was featured on the television show “Mighty Ships.” Alaskan Leader Fisheries, which operates four vessels, is owned by Shaun Andrew and Rob Wurm.

Fishing for cod year-round, much of the fish goes to stores across the U.S. Amanda Andrew said they wanted to get more of the product to local residents, which led to the food truck idea. With a longline ship, she said nets are not used to catch the fish, making it a more eco-friendly practice.

The idea of selling seafood products on a local level directly from Western Washington commercial fishing fleets is growing in popularity. The Dockside Market, which started in October 2020, is held the first and third Saturdays monthly at Squalicum Harbor.

Along with cod meals, such as fish-and-chips and sandwiches for lunch and dinner, the food truck offers clam chowder and side dishes. The company’s website lists upcoming stops; customers can also sign up for a newsletter to keep up to date.
