With a longtime Bellingham business closing this week, changes could soon be under way on what to do with the building.

The Color Pot at 1210 N. State St. is in the final days of its retirement sale. According to a sign on the door, the final day is Friday, Dec. 17.

The business has been around for 67 years, currently under the ownership of Bill and Teri Hewett.

Bill Hewett’s parents started the business as a paint store in 1955, according to a 2015 article in the Bellingham Alive! magazine. Over the decades it evolved into a carpet, hardwood, laminate and tile flooring business.

With the business leaving the building, the property also will be going up for sale. Bob Hall of Daylight Properties said he plans on selling the building, which also has a 20-space parking lot. He believes a new owner could do a major renovation of the property.

One possibility is bringing back the original look of the 12,000-square-foot building. Underneath that exterior is brick, similar to the nearby buildings. At one time, including the early 1950s, it was home to King & Daul, a tire repair and service business.

According to Hall it was remodeled in 1990 to its current look.
