Here’s an update on what’s happening with the Burlington, Michaels stores in Bellingham

After suffering fire and smoke damage, one major retail store in the Cordata neighborhood has reopened while the other is aiming for next month.

The Burlington clothing store at 4131 Meridian St. officially reopened on Monday, Dec. 13 and will be operating with expanded holiday hours, said cashier Alicia Basham. The store was closed after a fire caused more than $50,000 in damage on Wednesday, Nov. 3. The fire reportedly was started by a shoplifter who left before being caught.

With the reopening, the store has brand new inventory for customers.

“We’re so glad to reopen for our customers,” Basham said.

The Michaels craft store at 4383 Meridian St. is still cleaning up after smoke from a fire in an outside cardboard compactor heavily damaged the inside of the store on Saturday, Oct. 23. The store is aiming for a Friday, Jan. 28 soft reopening, said Adam Krell, manager of consumer communications for the company.
