This longtime Bellingham shop is looking for a new place to operate in 2022
Here’s a roundup of retail activity around Whatcom County:
▪ Carne, the butcher shop in Bellingham’s Columbia Neighborhood, is looking for a new space in 2022.
Owner Shaun Almassy announced on social media that the new owners of the property are planning to redevelop it into apartments, so Carne’s last day at 1205 Washington St. is Dec. 31.
In an email, Almassy said he’s looking for 1,500 square feet of space and a commercial kitchen. A parking lot would also be on his wish list as it was a key to helping Carne grow in the eight years it was at the former coffee drive-through building. While looking for a permanent space, Almassy is also looking into kitchen rental spaces to keep the business going during the transition.
Most importantly, he said the business itself is not closing.
“We run this little shop because we believe in creating easy access to sustainable and healthy food. We have not wavered in our belief and this pandemic has only solidified our vision of what society needs its food system to look like,” Almassy said.

▪ Menace Brewing announced it has a new food truck at its Fountain District Brewery. Monolo Eats is known for its Mexican food menu, serving a lot of its food in the Maple Falls area.
▪ For those who enjoy making holiday gifts, Bellingham Makerspace has an event that can help get it done.
The organization is hosting a Make & Take event from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 12, at its space in the Bellis Fair mall next to Dick’s Sporting Goods. The organization has a variety of tools and equipment to build craft gifts and volunteers will be available to give tours of the workshop.
Details can be found on the organization’s website.
▪ Uisce Irish Pub announced that it has expanded its hours and is now open every day of the week.
The downtown Bellingham pub is now open 8 p.m. to close on Sundays and Mondays. During the other days of the week, the pub at 1319 Commercial St. is open 4 p.m. to close.
▪ Fairhaven Coffee is now open at 401 Harris Ave., next to the Greyhound Bus Station and near the Bellingham Cruise Terminal.
Along with coffee, the former Coffee Junction space will have tea, pastries and gifts.
▪ If you’re on the lookout for Bellingham Bells gear, the team has a new retail store in Barkley Village.
The store and the team’s front office has moved into 3111 Newmarket St., Suite 105, next to the Barkley library branch in the Drake Condominiums.
Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, Dec. 11 and Dec. 18.
▪ Bellingham’s Cute But Crazy Socks has made the switch to sustainable, recyclable packaging just in time for the holiday season.
“Upgrading to eco shipping labels was our last major hurdle and it feels like a real win,” said owner Urania Shaklee in a news release. “Beyond recyclability, we’ve carefully selected shipping products that are made in the USA and minimize carbon footprint throughout their lifecycle. We’ve considered every detail, from the sustainable hemp twine bundling each customer’s socks to the label scraps remaining after shipping orders.”
Cute But Crazy Socks got its start in Bellingham as Modsocks in 2011 and has a retail store on 1323 Cornwall Ave. Details can be found on its website.
