These Bellingham restaurants are reopening as others plan to close, reassess

Here’s a roundup of recent retail and restaurant activity around Whatcom County:

The Harris Avenue Cafe in Fairhaven announced on its website that it is closed for now while it takes some time to reassess and make adjustments to its business model during the COVID-19 pandemic. The cafe, which opened in October 1998, shares the space with Tony’s Coffeehouse, which has been in Fairhaven even longer, opening in 1971.

Kulshsan Brewery’s Trackside outdoor beer garden is starting to wind down for the season.

For the month of November it will be open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. Its final day of the season is Sunday, Nov. 14.

The beer garden, which is near Waypoint Park in the Waterfront District, became a popular spot during the summer and early fall with its beer and live music options.

Northwater, the restaurant at the Holiday Inn & Suites near the Bellingham International Airport, has reopened for breakfast and dinner with a new menu. According to its Facebook post, evening menu items include Wood Stone oven pizzas as well as burgers and fish tacos.

Herb’s Cider, at 3155 Mercer Ave., No. 101, announced it plans to end production and tasting room operations Saturday, Oct. 30. Cider and merchandise will be available on the company’s website on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The company, which launched in 2017, was co-founded by Tim Alexander, drummer for the band Primus.

Latitude Kitchen & Bar near Sunset Square announced on Facebook that it will be reopening soon for breakfast and lunch. The restaurant has been closed since June, citing labor shortages as a factor. The staff at Latitude moved over to the Loft Restaurant on Bellingham’s waterfront during the closure.

Joe’s Sports Cards announced that it has opened a shop at 3201 Northwest Ave., near Yeager’s Sporting Goods. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

A building permit application was submitted to put in a Just Poke restaurant at 2925 Newmarket St., Suite 107, in the former Mix salad and sandwich shop.

Whatcom Museum is expanding its hours for its Family Interactive Gallery in the Lightcatcher building at 250 Flora St.

Starting Thursday, Nov. 4, FIG will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

FIG remains at 30% capacity and masks are required for all visitors. For further details, visit the museum’s website.

AAA Washington, which closed its travel store on Meridian Street during the pandemic, has decided not to reopen in Bellingham but will provide services online and at its Mount Vernon store, according to an email sent to members.

The Mount Vernon store is at 1811 Riverside Drive, Suite B. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
