Along with beer, there are now these tasty treats near Bellingham’s waterfront bike track
An ice cream shop opened in one of the cargo containers on the Bellingham waterfront near Kulshan’s Trackside Beer Garden. It’s called The Selkie Scoop and is operated by Meika Ziels, her sister Bryn Hubbard and Alex Turner.
The Selkie Scoop currently serves eight flavors of organic ice cream and has freshly rolled waffle cones. They plan to add some additional flavors in the coming weeks, Ziels said in an interview.
Ziels said they chose the waterfront location because it would be a good way to introduce their brand of ice cream to the community. They are also big fans of Kulshan Brewery and wanted to do something that supports each other on that redeveloping piece of property near Waypoint Park. While it’s only been open a few days, they’ve already received a lot of support from those using the nearby bike track, the beer garden as well as those going on walks, particularly in the evenings.
For now being on the waterfront will be seasonal, with current plans to be open until the end of October. They are pondering ideas about making more ice cream in the winter months, possibly setting up pint sales.
Meika and Bryn’s mother, Diane Brainard, owns the Old Town Cafe nearby and that’s where they work when not handling the ice cream operations.
The Selkie Scoop is currently open noon to 9:30 p.m. every day, but hours could change in the fall. The company has an Instagram account, but to contact them email sisters@theselkiescoop.com.
