These restaurant expansions, recovery from fire and no ice coming up in Bellingham

Here’s a roundup of recent restaurant business activity around Whatcom County:

The downtown Bellingham cafe Locus, at 120 W Holly St., announced on social media that it is temporarily closed as it restructures operations. Noting that it had grown to a point that it had to make some changes, the cafe said it will announce reopening dates on its social media accounts.

In what it termed “an unlikely series of highly unfortunate events,” in a Facebook post, Mallard Ice Cream had not one, but two walk-in storage freezers fail within hours of each other, resulting in the loss of its backup inventory. The downtown ice cream shop at 1323 Railroad Ave. was forced to close, but will reopen on Tuesday, July 13.

Brandywine Kitchen, which was damaged by fire in May, is aiming to reopen at the end of the month, according to an update posted on social media. Late July is also the 10-year anniversary of the downtown Bellingham restaurant at 1317 Commercial St., so it will have two big reasons to celebrate once it reopens.

A state restaurant/lounge liquor license application was submitted for a new business at 2330 Elm St., in the Columbia neighborhood near the Elm Street Market. The proposed business name is Rosette and the applicants are Brendan O’Neill, Ari O’Neill, Charles Pasquier, Allison Pasquier, Matt Shaver and Carla Shaver.

A building permit application was submitted to build a new restaurant at 3200 Northwest Ave., in the former Northwest Chiropractic Clinic building.

According to the permit, the new restaurant is Wanida Thai Bistro, which also has a location at 1213 Dupont St. and a Thai Express spot in a small building at 2201 Cornwall Ave. near Bellingham High School.

According to its website, Northwest Chiropractic Clinic closed at the end of May.

Washington Federal Bank recently closed its branch at 1100 Lakeway Drive, near Whole Foods. It has two branches in Bellingham on Cornwall Avenue and Barkley Boulevard, as well as branches in Ferndale, Lynden and Blaine.
