Here’s a roundup of recent retail activity in Whatcom County:

“Opening soon” signs have arrived in downtown Bellingham for a new cannabis-themed sandwich shop.

The eatery is called Cheba Hut and is going into the former Rocket Donuts location at 306 W. Holly St. The restaurant serves toasted sub sandwiches, salads and a variety of “munchies,” including brownies and garlic cheesy bread.

While the sandwiches have names that play off cannabis terms, the food is not actually infused with marijuana.

“Cheba Hut’s focus isn’t to get people interested in marijuana, it’s the fresh, unique, hand-crafted food options that keep people coming back,” according to its website.

It appears that Bellingham will have the first Cheba Hut in Washington state. The company, which started in 1998, has restaurants in 14 states, including Oregon, California and Arizona.

Cheba Hut did not immediately respond to an email about an opening date in Bellingham.

Greektown food truck had its grand opening last week, according to a Facebook post.

“Spring is a beautiful time here,” said Eric Abel, president of Bellewood Farms in a news release. “With many activities in our wonderful fresh air and COVID-19 protocols inside and outside, people of all ages can feel safe, too.”

The Ten Mile Cafe has also reopened, serving lunch and made-from-scratch cider doughnuts. Van Wingerden Home & Garden will also have a pop-up store, offering flowers and plants.

Five Bellingham neighborhood breweries are organizing a Sunnyland Garden Party. It will start at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 8, and run through Sunday, April 11.

Each brewery will create and release special beers for this pub-crawl style event while helping to raise money for Northwest Youth Services. Participating breweries are Kulshan Brewing, Otherlands Beer, Twin Sisters Brewing, Stemma Brewing, and Wander Brewing.

Those joining the garden party can visit each brewery over the course of the weekend, receive stamps on a punch card, and be entered into a drawing to win prizes. Garden party attire is strongly encouraged.

All COVID-19 restrictions, including face masks, will be observed.

The bar/video game lounge 1-Up Lounge announced on Facebook that it has reopened after being closed for the past year.

According to the post, up to 38 people can be in the lounge during Phase 3 of pandemic restrictions and will be open Wednesday through Sunday. The barbecue meals that were sold at times during the pandemic may also make an occasional appearance on the menu.
