Bellingham cafe reopens; bowling alleys reset; and what about Halloween?

Here’s a roundup of recent retail activity in Whatcom County:

After doing some remodeling, the Old Town Cafe is now open for business. At this point, there is no indoor seating, but the cafe at 316 W. Holly St. does have outdoor seating and is doing to-go orders.

Hours of operation are 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. The cafe announced on Facebook that it hopes to have an online ordering system up soon; in the meantime, to-go orders can be phoned in by calling 360-671-4431.

With signs going up on the building, Carnal appears to be getting closer to opening at the former Up & Up Tavern space at 1234 N. State St. The website indicates that once open it will offer a variety of meat and vegetable dishes. An opening date has not yet been announced on the website.

It appears Halloween is still being considered during the pandemic, at least when it comes to selling costumes. According to its website, Spirit Halloween is planning to open its seasonal store on Tuesday, Aug. 25, in the former Office Depot space at 4297 Meridian St.

Media reports indicate that Halloween is something that city officials across the U.S. are still pondering. Actress Jamie Lee Curtis recently said in an article in The New York Times that she expects parents will come up with ingenious ways to help children celebrate Halloween with costumes, even if it means not trick-or-treating.

With the state easing restrictions that will allow bowling alleys to reopen during this pandemic, the local facilities are working toward opening.

Park Bowl announced that it will be opening soon and to check its website for updates. 20th Century Bowl in downtown Bellingham is also in the planning stages of reopening and will update fans on Facebook. Mt. Baker Lanes in Ferndale indicated on Facebook that they plan to open on Saturday, Aug. 22.

The bowling alleys will be under tight restrictions to start. Examples of the new rules include only league players can play or practice, no spectators are allowed, only two bowlers per lane and no sharing of equipment.

The pet store UKUSCA Doggie announced on its website that it has closed its Fairhaven location and opened a space in Ferndale. It is now at 1855 Main St., near the Sonic Drive-In.
