COVID-19 means two of these three Whatcom businesses won’t be coming back
Three Whatcom businesses recently announced permanent closures, two due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the announced closures aren’t too far off rates compared to recent years.
During the five months the pandemic has taken hold in Whatcom County, The Bellingham Herald has counted 15 retail businesses that have announced they aren’t reopening, along with the Intalco Works curtailment. Typical annual counts of retail businesses are in the 30-60 range.
▪ The Wise Buys Thrift Store announced on Facebook that it will not reopen. The store, which sent its proceeds to the nonprofit group Lydia Place, cited the economic impact of COVID-19 pandemic as a factor. It was at 1224 N. State St.
▪ More Than Antiques in Lynden announced on Facebook that it was closing after 25 years of business. The store, which is on 400 Front St., will have a closeout sale through Saturday, Aug. 29.
▪ West Coast Pets also announced on Facebook that it was closing permanently, citing the new coronavirus pandemic as a factor. The company did a variety of services, including dog walking and pet sitting.
In normal economic times, the final months of a calendar year tend to see more business closures. The coming months could be particularly tough if the pandemic remains at current levels. As fall and winter arrive, outdoor seating becomes less of a possibility for local restaurants.
