A Seattle area credit union is entering the Whatcom County market.

BECU announced in a news release that it will open a branch in Bellingham later this year. The credit union will go into the Lakeway Shopping Center, near Whole Foods.

The 2,800-square-foot center will feature a “tellerless” layout, which encourages ATM, online and mobile banking. It will have employees available to handle one-on-one support for opening accounts and more complex services such as mortgages and auto loans, according to the news release.

BECU said the new branch is in direct response to the growing needs of BECU members, which total more than 7,500 in Whatcom County. The credit union, originally established to serve Boeing employees, is headquartered in Tukwila. It currently has more than $20 billion in assets and 1.2 million members.

BECU membership is open to anyone who works, lives, worships or goes to school in Washington state.

Whatcom County currently has five different credit unions, with WECU being the largest in terms of local membership with 128,000.
