PeaceHealth has reached an agreement to acquire a Bellingham physician-owned surgery center.

Under a proposed agreement, PeaceHealth would acquire the assets of Pacific Rim Outpatient Surgery Center. The agreement requires regulatory approval and a decision on the acquisition is expected to happen in March or April, according to a joint statement from the buyer and seller.

Pacific Rim is at 3009 Squalicum Parkway, near the PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center. According to its website, Pacific Rim has five operating rooms and three procedure rooms. The facility does around 5,000 surgeries a year and nearly 60 surgeons are allowed to work in the 20,000-square-foot facility.

The joint statement indicated that Pacific Rim and PeaceHealth “will be distinct and operate independently, as they do today.” Any additional details will be available once the proposed agreement is finalized, according to the joint statement.

Pacific Rim was founded in 2003 by a group of physicians. According to its website, specialties include neurology, oral/dental, orthopedic and gynecology. It has around 65 employees, not all of whom are full-time.

In an April 2017 article in The Bellingham Herald, it was estimated that about 35% of the procedures at Pacific Rim are knee and hip surgeries.
