Macy’s to shut down more stores this spring, including in Skagit County
A longtime Skagit County department store will be closing this spring, laying off more than 100 people.
The Macy’s store in Burlington will shut down this spring, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification sent out by the state Employment Security Department. According to the WARN notice, the number of workers impacted by the closure is 114, with layoffs beginning on Tuesday, March 17.
The store has two locations at Cascade Mall. Along with its department store, Macy’s has a space focused on men and children clothing along with home products. The total square footage of the two spaces is about 110,000 square feet.
In a statement to the Skagit Valley Herald, Macy’s said that it has been proud to serve the Burlington community for the past 31 years and encouraged shoppers to continue their patronage at nearby stores, including the Macy’s stores at Bellis Fair and the Macy’s Furniture Gallery on Meridian Street.
According to a report in USA Today, at least 19 Macy’s stores are slated to close in the coming months. Two others confirmed in Washington state are in downtown Seattle and downtown Walla Walla. The article said corporate officials from Macy’s would not confirm how many stores are closing or provide a complete list. In a statement, Macy’s said they will provide an investor update about stores on Wednesday, Feb. 5.
