New year starts with plenty of Whatcom retail news, including these cafe remodels

Here’s a roundup of recent Whatcom County retail activity:

The dealership formerly known as Northwest Honda has announced a change in name and ownership. The new name for the dealership at 2010 Iowa St. is Honda of Bellingham and it was recently purchased by the Jackson Automotive Group, according to a Facebook post.

According to records filed at the Whatcom County Treasurer’s Office, the sales price for the property was $7.85 million.

Avenue Bread announced on Facebook that it closed its Fairhaven cafe for a few weeks starting Monday, Jan. 6 for some remodeling work.

A couple of eating and drinking establishments are making progress toward getting open by filing state liquor license applications. Karolina Lobrow and Benjamin Howe submitted applications for Otherlands Beer to go into 2121 Humboldt St. Originally called Other Wonders, the Otherlands Beer will also have a cafe.

Also submitting a liquor license application is the Seven Spice restaurant for the space at 122 E. Magnolia St., at the Railroad Avenue intersection. Applicants are Helen Neville and Michael Taylor.

Bellingham Cider Company has submitted a building permit application to put in a production facility at 1900 Grant St., near Bellingham High School.

Acme Diner at 2045 Valley Hwy. reopened on Friday, Jan. 10 after a remodel. According to its website, the goal of new owner Frances Eustis is to provide a welcoming atmosphere with homemade, affordable meals. Hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. six days a week, closed on Monday.

According to a Facebook post Just Desserts in Lynden will be closed starting Sunday, Jan. 12, to work on the space and provide new offerings, including ice cream pints, take-and-bake items and an expanded cupcake/cake line. The company’s Lynden Dutch Bakery will open at 8 a.m. Monday through Saturday during the temporary closure.

Galos Flamed Grilled Chicken announced on Facebook that it opened its Bellingham location on Friday, Dec. 27. It’s at 4303 Meridian St., next to Starbucks. Along with chicken, the restaurant offers burgers, wraps and salads for lunch and dinner.
