As someone who spent three decades of life before getting into coffee, I'm still warming up to it as part of my morning routine. On the one hand, I can't deny its effectiveness at jump-starting my day; on the other, I'm still struggling to get used to the dark, bitter flavor that seems impossible to mask.

That's why a new arrival at my local Trader Joe's immediately caught my attention: Single Origin Kilimanjaro Instant Coffee. Sold in a 10-count box for just $4.99, this 100-percent Arabica blend is designed to brew instantly with hot water, promising a more elevated experience than your average instant coffee. And seeing as I'm still searching for a coffee I genuinely enjoy drinking, I figured why not give it a try?

Single Origin Kilimanjaro Instant Coffee, $4.99 at Trader Joe's

To me, coffee is a lot like whiskey. At first, the bitterness can be off-putting, but over time you start to appreciate the very notes that once made you hesitant to take another sip. This conveniently packed instant blend might be an easy skip for some who prefer a more traditional, barista-style cup, but its travel-friendly, single-serve design makes it a bit harder to ignore.

What wins me over about this instant blend is its coarse, granular texture, which feels more full-bodied than most powdery alternatives. This turns a simple boil-and-pour process into something that tastes surprisingly rich and complex, releasing a sweet, fragrant aroma as it dissolves in the water.

Not Your Average Instant Coffee

To achieve its flavor, Trader Joe's sources 100 percent Arabica beans grown in Tanzania at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro. The popular grocer describes this mixture as delivering a "toasty, earthy, invigorating taste," which I can attest is a pretty fair description. And because of its coarse texture, it also delivers more depth than your typical instant mix, with each granule dissolving into a fuller, more rounded cup.

That said, I'm still learning to appreciate coffee on its own, so most of my cups have creamer or milk in them. However, I decided to use Trader Joe's Single Origin Kilimanjaro Instant Coffee as an opportunity to test my progress, and I can admit this blend gave me a little hope that I was actually starting to enjoy it as is.

Final Thoughts

Take it from someone who's not easily impressed by a cup of coffee: this single-serve Trader Joe's mix is an ace in the hole worth trying. It's perfect for busy mornings, quick pick-me-ups at work or even as a thoughtful hosting essential when you have guests staying over. Plus, you can use a packet to elevate a tray of brownies or chocolate cake by dissolving it into the melted butter or liquid called for in the recipe.

At $5 a pop for 10 instant packets, that's a steal of a deal for two work weeks' worth of morning coffees. Definitely be sure to snag a box on your next TJ's run and see just how much a humble instant blend can transform your day.
