'Nomadland' Joining Netflix for Platform's July 2026 Lineup
July is shaping up to be an exciting month for Netflix subscribers. From highly anticipated original releases like Enola Holmes 3 to Oscar heavyweights like 1995's Apollo 13 and 2025's Hamnet, there will be something for everyone to binge-watch. This includes another critical darling-Nomadland.
Based on Jessica Bruder's 2017 nonfiction book Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century, the evocative road trip drama with neo-Western elements stars Frances McDormand as Fern, David Strathairn as Dave, Linda May as Linda, and Charlene Swankie as Swankie. Filmmaker Chloé Zhao directed from her own script.
For the uninitiated, here's a synopsis:
"After losing everything in the Great Recession, a woman in her sixties embarks on a journey through the American West, living as a van-dwelling nomad."
The movie premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 11, 2020, before its wider release in the US on Feb. 19, 2021, while simultaneously streaming on Hulu. It was a box-office success, grossing $39.5 million on a $5 million budget.
Critically, Nomadland was also well-received. The Hollywood Reporterhailed Zhao's work as a "powerful character study," while IndieWirelauded Zhao for her ability to work magic "with McDormand's face and the real world around it, delivering a profound rumination on the impulse to leave society in the dust." Time Outincluded Nomadland in its ranking of "The 100 Best Movies of the 21st Century (So Far)" in 2022. In 2025, The New York Timespublished a piece detailing its readers' 100 favorite movies of the century, which included the poignant drama.
As for Rotten Tomatoes, Nomadland sits pretty at 93% on the Tomatometer and 82% on the Popcornmeter. The movie scored its fair share of accolades, including an Oscar for Best Achievement in Directing for Zhao, who made history as the first non-white woman to win the award, and Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for McDormand. It also took home the statue for Best Picture.
Nomadland will arrive on Netflix on July 1, 2026. (Be sure to set aside some tissues for this one.)
