Heartbroken Swan Waits Faithfully for Eggs That Never Hatch
Gina Bourdeaux is the proud human mom to Olivia and Ophelia, the black swans that live on her farm in Madison, Georgia. Recently, Ophelia laid a clutch of eggs that, sadly, weren't fertile. Still, she never gave up, continuing to incubate them long after Gina knew they would never hatch.
Knowing she'd eventually have to remove the eggs, Gina waited until Ophelia seemed ready. In a heartbreaking moment, the devoted swan quietly led Gina back to the nest, almost as if she understood there would be no babies and was letting her know it was finally okay to take the eggs away. It's an emotional reminder of just how powerful a mother's instincts can be, even in the animal world.
@theblackswansisters We have learned over this past year to let Ophelia decide when to pull the eggs. Today she was ready…. She will be sad for a few days but needs the freedom to go to the pond and do other swan things now. We love the egg laying process even when they are not fertile because it shows how amazing she will be as a mother. This is Ophelias 4th time laying eggs. Olivia has only layed them once. Just like people, each swan is different but we have no doubt both girls will be excellent swan Moms when its time.
Still Tone - Bentley Treadstone
We almost cried when Ophelia walked away at the end... our hearts couldn't take how genuine her sadness seemed.
Gina shared more about the heartbreaking scene in the caption. "We have learned over this past year to let Ophelia decide when to pull the eggs. Today, she was ready. She will be sad for a few days, but needs the freedom to go to the pond and do other swan things now. We love the egg-laying process even when they are not fertile because it shows how amazing she will be as a mother.
This is Ophelia's fourth time laying eggs. Olivia has only laid them once. Just like people, each swan is different, but we have no doubt both girls will be excellent swan Moms when it's time."

How Long Do Black Swans Sit on Their Eggs?
According to the University of Melbourne, black swans typically incubate a clutch of 4-11 eggs for about 35 to 45 days. Parents mate for life and share nesting duties, although the female spends more time on the nest. In general, the male works the day shift while the female takes over for the night shift. Both are also very protective of it.
If the eggs are infertile or fail to develop, swans don't immediately realize it. Instead, they often continue tending the nest well beyond the normal hatching period before eventually abandoning both the nest and the eggs.
Proof that nature can be both beautiful and heartbreaking, often at the same time.
