1952 John Wayne Movie Classic Set in Ireland Named Among His Best Ever - And You Can Watch It Free
John Wayne played, most famously, a cowboy and a Marine, but he also played a former boxer who falls in love with the fiery actress Maureen O'Hara in an epic movie that is among his best ever.
It's the 1952 classic The Quiet Man, and you can watch it for free (with ads) on Movie Vault or Kanopy or for a small fee on Amazon Prime, Apple TV or Fandango at Home.
Gold Derby named The Quiet Man the 5th best John Wayne movie of all time. The movie has 91% ratings from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
'The Quiet Man' Paired John Wayne With Legendary Movie Director John Ford Again
The Quiet Man was a "longtime passion project for John Ford, a romantic, sentimental journey back to his Irish roots," Gold Derby wrote. Ford, of course, was the legendary director who paired with Wayne in other classic movies, such as The Searchers.
"It was also a major departure for the director and his favorite leading man, better known for their more macho collaborations," noted Gold Derby.
The movie starred Wayne as a former American boxer, who returns to the town on Ireland's western coast where he was born, meeting O'Hara's character. A fist fight between Wayne and O'Hara's "loutish brother" is the most memorable scene, Gold Derby reported.
According to an article posted on the Library of Congress, "During pre-production on his wartime tribute They Were Expendable (1945), John Ford learned that Maureen O'Hara was starring in the swashbuckler The Spanish Main at RKO. O'Hara knew that Ford had returned from military service in Europe to make a feature film, but had no idea why he wanted to see her at the studio. She soon learned that he wanted her to play the female lead in
a film based on a Maurice Walsh story called The Quiet Man, to be shot on location in Ireland."
John Wayne Tried His Hand at Comedy in 'The Quiet Man'
The Quiet Man's genre is a romantic comedy, which was a bit of a departure for Wayne.
"Director John Ford and star John Wayne depart the Western for the Irish countryside, and the result is a beautifully photographed, often comedic romance," the critics' consensus on Rotten Tomatoes reads.
Fans weighed in on Rotten Tomatoes. "A wonderful Irish film with a charming Maureen O'Hara and tough John Wayne. Director John Ford's romantic comedy-drama The Quiet Man (1952) is quite a pleasant surprise. John Ford's direction shows off the lush natural countryside of Ireland, old Irish traditions, quaint Irish people, a massive boxing match, and true love," read one.
"John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara's chemistry is there to see, can see why they did a few films together and were friends in real life, they complemented each other well on screen," another person wrote.
"Wonderful movie. Loved that the majority of the movie was filmed in Ireland. Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne had great on screen chemistry," a movie fan wrote.
According to John Wayne.com, O'Hara and Wayne starred in several movies together. "Wayne and co-star Maureen O'Hara made their first on screen appearance together in the final installment of John Ford's cavalry trio, Rio Grande 8 (1950). The stars would appear onscreen together several times over the next twenty years," the site noted.
