Character Actor Patton Oswalt Is Alive at 57 - Rumors of His Death Are False
Despite rumors that he had died, actor and comedian Patton Oswalt has been confirmed alive.
On Thursday, an account on X posted a memorial to character actor Patton Oswalt. "Seriously f--- 2026. Rest in peace." A community note was added to the bottom of the memorial post, clarifying that the actor was still alive.
"American comedian and actor Patton Oswalt is not dead. He is alive and actively touring in 2026," it said.
Oswalt himself went online to dispel the rumors, and he played into the joke. The voice actor quoted and reposted, saying, "Yeah, this has been very sudden and I'm trying to adjust. Asking for privacy as I ascend."
Some users responded in kind. One said, "I'm sorry that you died and had to find out this way." Another responded, "I'm sorry for your loss of yourself. I'm sure you must be beside yourself."
Oswalt has hundreds of credits for film, television, and video games. His most well-known role is as the voice of Remy the Rat in Ratatouille. He has also been a character actor in many live-action projects, including each of the quadruplet Koenig brothers in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Spence Olchin in The King of Queens. Oswalt is currently on tour throughout the United States. The next date of his tour is September 4 in Kentucky.
Death hoaxes are common online, where anyone can say anything. Earlier this year, Michael J. Fox and Queen Latifah had to clarify that they were not dead.
Queen Latifah posted a video on Instagram to disprove the death rumor. The 55-year-old actress said, "I'm 100 percent A-Ok."
Fox, 64 and still alive, wrote on Threads, "How do you react when you turn on the TV and CNN is reporting your death? Do you … A) switch to MNSBC, or whatever they are calling themselves these days, (B) Pour [scalding] hot water on your lap, if it hurts [you 're] fine, (C) Call your wife, hopefully she's concerned but reassuring, (D) Relax, they do this once every year, (E) Ask yourself wtf? I thought the world was ending, but apparently it's just me and I'm OK. Love, Mike."
