Relationship Expert Shares 5 Questions to Ask on a First Date
First dates can be stressful, between meeting a new person for the first time and trying to present your best self. But one dating expert recently gave some tips to make things a bit easier.
Natassia Miller, a relationship expert and founder of sexual wellness company Wonderlust, recently spoke about the importance of in-person dates in a digital world and gave a bit of advice on how to make sure that date goes well.
Dates Are Important
While we're living in an increasingly digital world where many of our interactions are online, Miller thinks that meeting someone in person is vital to developing a connection or seeing what kind of chemistry there is.
"When you meet someone in person, you get to gauge a level of chemistry and energy that you wouldn't otherwise when you're on the apps," Miller told CNBC during a recent interview.
While apps and online interactions can be easy for initial connections, there is no substitute for meeting in person.
Five Questions to Ask
The most important part of a first date is simply getting to know each other. As Miller points out, it's important to gauge whether or not you could even see this person as a friend before you even consider a romantic connection.
"The first time that you meet someone, you should really just try to get to know them as someone who would be a friend rather than an actual romantic interest," Miller said. "What you're really trying to gauge is, do you like this person at all?"
That said, here are five questions she suggests asking to help find that connection.
- What brought you here?
- What sparks your curiosity about this event?
- Who are the kinds of people that you like to surround yourself with?
- What are your hobbies?
- What do you spend most of your time thinking about?
Those questions should help you gauge whether or not you click with this person.
Not a One-Way Street
While it's important to ask questions, Miller points out that it's equally important to listen to what the other person has to say and answer their questions thoughtfully, as well.
"When you are with someone who is curious and who asks questions and is genuinely interested and listens," Miller said. "That really establishes a strong foundation for a healthy relationship."
All in all, it's important to show genuine interest in both your questions, your answers, and your listening.
