1949 John Wayne War Movie Was Legend's 'Greatest' Non-Western Ever - And You Can Watch It Free

John Wayne is usually associated with westerns, and they are great ones, like The Searchers, Rio Bravo, and True Grit. However, the acting legend also starred in a well-received movie about World War 2 - and you can watch it free.

The movie is called Sands of Iwo Jima, and it's available to watch for free (with ads) on YouTube TV. The movie is also free on Pluto TV. It's also available for $3.99 on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, and other streaming platforms.

"During World War II in the Pacific, a tough sergeant of Marines molds raw recruits into fighting men by is himself shot by a sniper," YouTube TV says of the film. The movie is listed as one of five "essential" movies about Iwo Jima, according to Military.com.

MovieWeb called the film Wayne's "greatest non-western movie" ever and called it a "classic war movie masterpiece." Wayne starred in nine films about World War 2 during his career. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a perfect 100% score from critics.

Fans Explained the John Wayne Movie's Significance - the Movie Led Some Moviegoers to Enlist

On the comment thread of the YouTube video, fans of the movie expressed thanks to military veterans and explained the movie's significance to them. "The final scene of this film led directly to me enlisting in The Corps in 1978. Forty five years later and I'd do it all over again," wrote one.

"This movie is the reason I chose to serve a 4 year enlistment in the USMC as a young man in the in mid 1990s. Semper Fi," another person added. "Wayne almost won a Oscar for his role in this film. This film hasn't been on TCM in quite a time but glad it's here," added another movie fan.

"I last watched this movie in the last days of boot camp in Paris island Jan 1983. It was the end and we got to go see a movie. was a big deal to us. Semper fi all you brothers and sisters who have served before and since," added another fan.

"This is one of my favorite John Wayne movies. I love the close ups on the face expressions and the combination of many talented actors. Overall great film," a fan responded.

John Wayne Plays Marine Sgt. John Stryker in Sands of Iwo Jima

According to Rotten Tomatoes, Wayne played Marine Sgt. John Stryker, who "is despised by his own men for his rough attitude and exhausting training regimen. As the war in the Pacific progresses, though, they begin to respect Stryker's hard-edged outlook on war and his brutal training methods, as it has helped them prepare for the harsh realities of the battlefield."

The site added: "They'll need all of Stryker's battle tactics if they want to survive what will end up being one of the bloodiest engagements of the war: the Battle of Iwo Jima."

According to Nick the Movie Critic, "It received positive reviews and made money at the box office. John Wayne was nominated for an Oscar for 'Best Actor.'" He added, "After the movie premiered, John placed his hand and footprints outside the Grauman's Chinese Theater."
