Rockstar Games Was Sued Over 'Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas'
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas broke new ground for video games when it was first released. Everything from the gameplay mechanics to the extensive storytelling was a huge step forward for the iconic franchise, and it's still considered one of GTA's best titles today.
The game introduced bold new open-world mechanics, allowing players to explore multiple cities and interact with hundreds of characters on a scale that very few video games had accomplished before. However, this ambitious scope ultimately proved to be damaging for Grand Theft Auto:San Andreas.
In 2005, a skilled modder named Patrick Wildenborg discovered content hidden within the game's code that was inaccessible to most players. Initially, Rockstar had intended to include more graphic sexual content in the game, but was forced to remove this in order to maintain the game's "Mature" rating from the ESRB.
But instead of deleting the content, they simply hid it and made it inaccessible to players. This is what Wildenborg discovered, and the result was disastrous for Rockstar Games.
After delving into the game's source code, Wildenborg discovered the remains of Rockstar's original planned content: a scene where protagonist CJ has sexual intercourse with his girlfriend. He released this modified code online under the name "Hot Coffee," and it was downloaded over 1,000,000 times in one week (via Eurogamer).
The ESRB was forced to change Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas' rating to "Adults Only", and a class action lawsuit was filed against Rockstar Games for allegedly misleading the audience with false information about the game's sexual content.
San Andreas was temporarily banned in Australia while the game's code was removed, and later released with updated security. All the while, Rockstar received an official warning from the Federal Trade Commission, and the ESRB updated its legal guidelines to include fines of $1 million for any developers who falsely disclose their games' sexual content.
Despite all this controversy, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas remains one of Rockstar's greatest accomplishments, and a title that spawned an entirely new generation of video games. It's widely considered the turning point for the GTA franchise, building the foundations that would later revolutionize video games forever.
