Medical device maker shutters Mukilteo facility, lays off 83
A medical laser-tech facility in Mukilteo will close this summer, laying off 83 employees, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed Thursday.
Synrad, a CO2 laser manufacturer owned by Massachusetts-based medical devices manufacturer Novanta, is preparing to shut down its facility at 4600 Campus Place in July.
The 83 employees at the facility include engineers, assemblers and technicians who help make technology used for advanced medical devices, robots, surgery and manufacturing. That work will be transferred to Novanta's affiliate locations in the United Kingdom, according to the WARN notice.
In a statement, Novanta spokesperson Cari Rutkoskie said the decision was part of ongoing efforts to improve "scale, efficiency, and resilience" across its manufacturing network.
"This was a difficult decision, and we are grateful for the contributions of the employees who worked at this site and are committed to supporting them as they transition."
Synrad's exit leaves Novanta with seven facilities in the U.S. and around 3,000 employees worldwide.
It's unclear what will happen to Synrad's 4.4-acre property, which the company purchased in 2000 for almost $1.4 million. Today, the property's assessed value is just over $15 million.
