Fans Didn't Realize Jesse Was Almost Written Off ‘Breaking Bad' Early On
Fans might find it hard to imagine Jesse Pinkman missing from Breaking Bad, but he was originally supposed to die in Season 1. Creator Vince Gilligan planned to kill off the character early to push Walter White further into darkness.
Creator Vince Gilligan wrote that Walter White, the chemistry teacher-turned meth lab entrepreneur, would make terrible decisions that would lead to Jesse's death. Jesse was originally written as a short-term partner who would end up dying as a consequence of Walter's ever-worsening choices.
But Aaron Paul's depth of character and vulnerability in his performance drew fans deeper into the drama. The chemistry between the teacher and student was undeniable.
The ‘Blue Sky' Meth Lab
Jesse starts a terrible student and a low-level meth dealer who becomes the unlikely partner in what becomes a major drug empire in New Mexico, but his own drug use gets in the way and gets him in trouble. They came up with the idea to use a chemical that gave the drug the distinctive color and the name "Blue Sky," knocking competitors out with their superior product.
The creators show how two characters can change over time. Walter, the unassuming bookish chemistry teacher became an egomaniacal leader, and Jesse, the affable drug user who has empathy for innocent bystanders who get harmed along the way.
His acting is gripping and, at times, hard to watch, especially when his character sees others suffering. The scene where his girlfriend Jane, played by Krysten Ritter, overdoses on heroin and chokes to death on her own vomit in season 2 is one viewers won't soon forget.
Keeping Jesse alive didn't just save a character; it reshaped the entire story. His moral conflict and emotional fallout became essential to Walter's transformation, turning Breaking Bad into one of television's most complex dramas.
